Egon Spangler

The Turning Point

There he is desperately trying to heat up the mash tun.

E is the fifth letter of the alphabet. This is the fifth batch of beer I have brewed as part of this project.

This Brewlog entry actually represents a turning point. Not because of the beer, but because with the help of Colin, I have switched off the crappy old blog format, and now Barleylegal.ca has hit the web. The only problem is that because of the backlog that occurred during the transition, and some laziness on my part, I have to write entries for eight brews as fast as I can.

I'm pretty sure that no one really wants to read every detail, and I've even cut down on my record keeping. Other than the mash profile, I only record the fuckups.

From here on the brewlogs will be much shorter. This will make the read less of a chore for you, and give me more time to work on hilarious comics.

Anyway, Egon had the same grain bill as Dorothy Gale, except that I might have accidently added an additional 0.5 Ounces of black malt. This turned out to make no appreciable difference -- I think.

THE MASH

  • Strike with 12 Litres @ 71° Celsius for 62° Celsius
  • Rest 60 Minutes
  • Decoct 1/5th and add back for 68° Celsius
  • Rest 60 Minutes

The purpose of this decoction stuff is to simulate a step infusion with a plastic mash tun. Weather or not these specific temperature choices are wise is another mater.

It actually worked out fine. I've gotten into the habit of adding 1 Liter of water to the decoction though, just to guard against scorching, and evaporation.

THE BOIL

No problem, except I forgot the Irish moss somehow. Didn't seam to mater as the whole hops played a part.

I re-pitched wyeast 1028 from Dorothy Gale.

Either I'm screwing up my hydrometer readings again, or you can call me Captain Attenuation.
